QTL Quality Teaching and Learning

QTL: Quality Teaching and Learning

Quality Teaching and Learning (QTL) is a comprehensive professional development model designed to empower educators with knowledge of effective instructional strategies and technology integration to implement the North Carolina Standard Course of Study for second through fifth grade.  Literacy connections address the incorporation of print, audio/video and multimedia resources to support teaching and learning. The correlation of all resources addresses diverse learning styles. Demonstration of effective classroom management techniques is evident throughout the model using strategies proven to affect student achievement. Classroom time is allotted primarily to learning strategies for engaging learners using technology as a tool. Technology is integrated in a holistic approach where connections are logical. QTL establishes a consistent instructional design that incorporates best practices, designs for learning, and new tools for learning including technology.

A team of educators from an elementary school will attend six days of training and participate in two classroom visits from the QTL instructor. During the first five days participants will be actively engaged in lessons that model best practices and learning theories in a classroom/lab setting. Participants will leave the sessions with a notebook packed full of useful information that reinforces what they have learned. The final day of training will focus on instructional planning and lesson plan development. Two classroom visits will provide follow-up and support to ensure teachers are able to apply what they have learned in their own classroom setting. The first visit will be an individualized coaching session where the QTL instructor will assist in developing a lesson plan that includes appropriate activating, cognitive, and summarizing strategies that address the SCOS objective and essential question. The QTL instructor will also aid in the appropriate utilization of technology as a teaching tool. During the second visit the QTL instructor will work with individual teachers to implement the lesson. The QTL instructors will provide continued support, with on-line tips and on-site visits whenever feasible.
