Online English Grammar

This site is an excellent reference tool for grammar rules on word usage and parts of speech.  Topics can be accessed from the Table of Contents or from a Subject index.  Online tests for grammar skills are available in The Test Centre. Free registration is required to take a test.

Authors and Illustrators on the Web

The Children's Literature Web Guide to Authors and Illustrators on the Web is an alphabetized index of links to web resources for most children's writers and illustrators. The websites include the author's personal website plus sites that are maintained by others.

 

Bartlett's Familiar Quotations

The 10th edition of Barlett's Quotations contains a searchable database of over 11,000 quotations. Simply type a keyword and all quotes containing that word will appear. Click on the link to view the entire quote.

 

BJ Pinchbeck's Homework Helper English

This Discovery School site provides links to authors, novel guides, Spark Notes, poetry, literature and a glossary of literary terms. There are also links to assistance with writing citation and bibliographies.

 

The Blue Book of Grammar and Punctuation

The Blue Book of Grammar and Punctuation is an invaluable resource for writers to check the rules concerning proper grammar and punctuation.

 

The English Institute

This site provides text and examples of basic grammar and word usage.

 

Guide to Grammar and Writing

Writing skills and techniques are explained. Examples are given to show correct and incorrect form. A variety of writing styles are explained at the sentence and paragraph levels. There are also links to forms of communications (example for letter writing, resumes, etc) and principles of composition. Interactive quizzes on the various skills can be accessed.

A Guide for Writing Research Papers
This site provides step-by-step instructions on how to write a research paper using the MLA documentation process. It also provides help with citations.

This resource helps writers understand the usage of commonly misused words.

SAT Vocabulary Preparation
Study flashcards to learn SAT vocabulary words.  Twenty separate lists of 250 words are accessible. Online quizzes are available to test your knowledge of the words, but users must register with the site to be able to log in.  Registration is free.
