Teacher's Note

Hints:

  1. I have divided the process into activities in order for you to access them easily. Since I only have 35 minute class periods, I could only really do one activity a class period. However, if you teach 55 minutes or 90 minute classes, you could tailor the activities to your needs.
  2. For the altars, I had my students create an altar for a famous person. I told them it could be an actor, an actress, a sports player, a president, an important world leader/figure, etc. However, you could select the type of person you want them to make an altar for. You could have them pick famous painters/artists from Spanish speaking countries. You could even tie in famous people from their core classes. Anything and Everything works!!
  3. I also provided my students with a variety of colored paper in order to make their altars colorful and festive.
  4. I asked my students to be sure to include a picture of their person. This picture could be hand-drawn or computer generated. Since you are already on the web with this webquest, you could have the students search for a picture of their famous person.
  5. Students also used realia to create their altars. Even though I did not require it, the things they brought really did add to the authenticity of the altar.
  6. I really tried not to limit my students too much. About the only information I provided for them was the subject (an altar for a famous person who has passed away). The rest they did.
  7. These are wonderful to display in the classroom or a showcase. The students love seeing their work and students who are not taking Spanish suddenly have an interest in it.
  8. The group and individual evaluation form are on the same sheet. I get their individual grade from their evaluations and my own. Their group grade is from their evaluations and my own.
