Introduction: Native Americans have been a vital part of North Carolina throughout the history of our state. Native American languages, cultures and contributions to our state have been and continue to be significant. Through the activities associated with this webquest, you will learn much about these early settlers of our state.


The Task: Use the websites in each section to answer the questions about Native Americans in North Carolina.

Activity 1:

Activity 3:

1. Open the "Native Americans in Early North Carolina" file and print the questions.

2. To find the answers, click on the following web link: North Carolina Encyclopedia - Historical Highlights of North Carolina.


In the classroom:

Prior to engaging the students in this online activity, the teacher might want to ask the students the following questions:

1. How many of you have ever visited Cherokee, North Carolina?

2. Have any of you ever seen the outdoor dramas "Unto These Hills" or "The Lost Colony?"

3. Are the Cherokees the only remaining Native American tribe in North Carolina?

4. How has North Carolina's Native American population changed over the last four hundred years?

Evaluation:

After students complete the three activities associated with this webquest, the teacher will go over the correct answers, punctuated with additional student and teacher input and comments relative to the correct responses.


Conclusion:

At the end of this lesson, the teacher will summarize what the students have been exposed to, not only subject content, but also what technology skills were necessary to complete the lesson.
